Upstage previously performed Dangerous Corner by J.B. Priestley.
Dangerous Corner is a drama about truths better kept hidden. The setting is a dinner party held by Robert and Freda Caplan for their friends and business associates. During the evening, conversation turns to Robert's dead brother Martin and several truths are uncovered which were better left unsaid. Each of the characters has a secret which could destroy everyone’s world. The play explores how telling the truth sometimes destroys lives and asks how far people are willing to go to learn the whole truth.
J. B. Priestley (1894-1984), originally a novelist, is better known as a dramatist. He says he wrote Dangerous Corner to prove he could produce plays as well as successful novels such as The Good Companions and Angel Pavement which had already earned him considerable fame. He wrote this, his first play, in less than a week, an extraordinary burst of creativity, even for this prolific playwriter. Priestly’s An Inspector Calls, performed by UPSTAGE in 2001, was one of the club’s most popular productions.
Debuted in 1932 at the Lyric Theatre in London, Dangerous Corner is being given a very modern treatment here by Director Jeff Scattini. This California native has been an actor, designer, and director for the past ten years. He has worked in theatre in various positions in the USA and Europe. He is also an accomplished writer, musician and artist.
UPSTAGE, founded in 1982, is currently celebrating 25 years of quality theatre in Bern. Having presented over 60 productions, they are an established part of Switzerland’s English-speaking cultural scene and currently have about 80 members of mixed nationalities.
