Play Reading: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang

Monday, June 12, 2017 - 18:30
St. Ursula's Church, Bern

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a comedy play written by Christopher Durang. The show revolves around three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, during a visit by the third who supports them. The show depicts how their lives have evolved and how they have come to be in their current state. Some of the play's element's were derived from the works of Anton Chekhov, including several of the characters' names, the play's setting in a cherry orchard, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home.

The show won the 2013 Tony award for best play and starred Billy Magnussen, Kristine Nielsen, David Hyde Pierce and Sigourney Weaver.

There are four women's roles and two men's roles in the play. One of the female roles is rather "diva-ish" and one a bit more quirky (sort of the soothsayer-type), one role an ingénue and one is a middle-aged person who generally whines about her fate but finishes the play on a rather positive note. The men are: a middle-aged man and a young stud. The interaction among the characters is very funny -sometimes because of the honesty but also because it's Christopher Durang after all. (And if you don't know his work, now is the time to experience it!)
