It is somewhere in the middle of England in 1950.
Britain is still in the grip of food, fuel and clothing rationing.
In the little village of Chipping Cleghorn, quite close to the town of Medenham Wells, an announcement appears in the local newspaper, at the foot of the personal columns:
A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October the thirteenth, at Little Paddocks - at six-thirty p.m. Friends please accept this, the only intimation.
The owner of Little Paddocks, Miss Blacklock, is set into quite a tizzy by this, but not quite as much as some other occupants of this house.
